Learning EandM Coding

Medicare evaluation and management

You do not need basic physician training to become a part of the health care industry. The medical coding industry is projected to grow by around 20% over the next five years, providing many employment opportunities. Evaluation and management coding, or E and M or EandM coding for short, is becoming increasingly important as the size of the healthcare industry and the amount of payments and other things it processes explodes. For instance, over five billion payment claims are processed every year in the US. Learning evaluation and management codes and procedures is one way to get involved in the lucrative medical industry without basic physician training.

Evaluation and management documentation generates an enormous amount of paperwork that must be accurately stored and transmitted so that patients receive the proper care. If the wrong person gets the wrong care, it can be harmful or fatal, so it is essential that documents are stored properly. Also, billing for medical services can be complex, between insurance companies, the implementation of America’s new health care act and other government programs, and what patients have to pay themselves. A solid system needs to be in place to process these claims effectively. In 2010, new EandM codes were created for patients that need ongoing care that does not require actual face time with the patients. EandM is evolving to keep up with the industry.

If you are interested in EandM coding as a profession, you do not need basic physician training for the job. The only requirement for the training are a high school diploma or a GED. Most schools put medical coding and medical billing in the same training program. If you are interested in medicine, but do not want to go through all of the schooling of basic physician training, this may be an option for you.
